Cape Bolinao Lighthouse sits on top of Punta Piedra Point in Patar, Bolinao. Although no longer open to the general public, it remains one of the tallest lighthouses in the Philippines, having 135 steps of stairs. It was built in 1905 by British and Filipino engineers on the lofty hill of solid rock that is Punta Piedra Point, 18 kilometers from the town proper of Bolinao and 351 feet above sea level. The lighthouse provides a 360-degree panoramic view of a part of Cape Bolinao Dendro Thermal Ipil-Ipil Plantation and the West Philippine Sea. The lighthouse has been a frequent site of location shooting for local movies. This lighthouse is just 35 feet shorter than the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Ilocos Norte.
Don’t let Bani’s small-town charm throw you off—this unassuming municipality may seem off the beaten path, but it more than deserves a spot on your itinerary. Be warned, though, the adventures to be found in Bani aren’t for the faint of heart. A must-go destination for adrenaline junkies, Bani is home to amazing treks and jaw-dropping cave systems just begging to be explored. For those looking for something a little more laidback, the town is home to a lot of history (just ask about the story of the Bani tree and the myth of Sitio Surip!) and excellent grub.
Bani is also a pilgrimage destination, as it is home to the Redeemer’s Cross and the Immaculate Conception Parish, so be sure to book your accommodations early if you want first dibs on an amazing place to spend your Holy Week!
Balingasay River is included in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the cleanest river in the Philippines. Gracing the center of Bolinao, this river is just a 10-minute drive away from the town proper. A mangrove expedition by boat is what the people of Patar offer to the visitors of the immaculate river (aside from their sumptuous grilled seafood dishes they are known for!). Tourists also en route to Bolinao Falls (another famous Bolinao attraction) since it is accessible through the Balingasay River. If you’re on the lookout for a tranquil cruise, this is the river to visit!
