Mushroom Production (14) Mushroom Production (7) Mushroom Production (5)
In May 2000, the Mushroom Research and Development Center was housed in Pangasinan State University's (PSU) Biology Laboratory. It became fully operational in February 2003 upon the constuction of its own laboratory building nestled in a 4,000-square meter lot of PSU. The center contains a laboratory room wherein strains of cultured mushrooms are being produced and stored. It aims for the sustainable production, marketing and distribution of high quality and adaptable strains of mushroom species accessible to farmers, students, researchers, development workers, entrepreneurs and other mushroom growers. With this in mind, the center offers consultations for those who want to get into mushroom production, as well as, a 3-day training which teaches mushroom production technologies.

From the town proper, this vast greenland can be reached via a 5-minute tricycle ride. For those not familiar with the area, walking into this serene park is like discovering a secret hiding place in the city. The place offers a scenic view of the Caraballo Mountains, the Narciso Bridge, and water pooled from the irrigation dams nearby--making it an ideal spot for viewing the sunset. What was once a field of cogon grass has now been transformed to a recreation area wherein families can rent a bahay kubo for the day and set up a picnic. Rows of trees provide shade from the heat, and a small bridge offers a view of the lagoon, which is sometimes teeming with fish.

Gabaldon Building
Attraction
2.96 km away

The Gabaldon building has a historical significance, especially to the older generation of Sta. Maria. It is one of the heritage schoolhouses built between 1907 and 1946, following the standard plans designed by Architect William E. Parsons. Constructed in March 19, 1920, the edifice has etched their place in history, serving as hospitals, town halls or evacuation centers in times of war and calamities. Run down by time, the elements, and neglect, it was abandoned altogether. Last year, however, the building was deemed worthy of restoration. It retained its original functional design, which was certified safe and stable, and is now being used as a classroom by Sta. Maria East Integrated School. Its rooms are big and wide, with lauan floors and enormous capiz windows, making it perfect for our tropical climate. By restoring the schoolhouses, their historical significance is preserved, while the need for more classrooms is also addressed.

Most locals believe that their patron saint can grants petitions, whether it be healing from sickness or restoration of relationship. Some devout believers even share stories of past miracles done by Our Lady of the Pillar. A man-made well is also situated beside the shrine, and as with all wells, visitors have made it a point to throw coins in it after making a wish. Whether you believe this to be true or not, the shrine remains a majestic sight to behold and offers a peek into the locals' beliefs and values.
